The questions people ask most before getting started.
Video file size is calculated using the formula: File Size = (Video Bitrate + Audio Bitrate) × Duration ÷ 8. The video bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. Our calculator uses industry-standard bitrate estimates for accurate results.
Different codecs use different compression algorithms. Newer codecs like H.265, VP9, and AV1 achieve much better compression than H.264 while maintaining similar quality. ProRes is designed for editing, not distribution, so it has very high bitrates for maximum quality.
AV1 offers the best compression efficiency, producing the smallest files for the same visual quality. However, encoding AV1 is slower and not all devices support playback. H.265/HEVC is a good balance of compression and compatibility. H.264 has the widest compatibility but produces larger files.
It depends on the codec: approximately 15.8 GB with H.264, 6.8 GB with H.265/HEVC, 6.8 GB with VP9, 83.3 GB with ProRes, and 5.4 GB with AV1 at 30fps. Use our calculator to get precise estimates for any combination of settings.
The estimates are based on typical bitrates for each resolution, frame rate, and codec combination. Actual file sizes may vary depending on video content complexity, encoder settings, and variable bitrate encoding. Videos with lots of motion or detail may be larger, while static content may be smaller.
Video bitrate is the amount of data used per second to encode the visual content, typically measured in Mbps (megabits per second). Audio bitrate is the data rate for the sound track, usually 128-320 kbps. Video bitrate makes up the vast majority of a video's total file size.
Yes, higher frame rates increase file size because more frames need to be encoded per second. A 60fps video is roughly 1.5-2x larger than a 30fps video at the same resolution and codec, not exactly double because modern codecs compress temporal redundancy efficiently.
1080p (1920×1080) is the standard for most social media platforms and provides a good balance of quality and file size. 4K (3840×2160) is recommended for YouTube if you want the highest quality. 720p works well for shorter clips or when bandwidth is limited.
A 1-hour 1080p video at 30fps requires approximately 3.6GB with H.264, 2.3GB with H.265/HEVC, 2.3GB with VP9, 26.5GB with ProRes, and 1.8GB with AV1. The exact size depends on your codec choice and bitrate settings.
H.265 (HEVC) typically produces files 35-50% smaller than H.264 at similar visual quality. For example, a 10-minute 4K video at 30fps is approximately 2.6GB with H.264 but only 1.1GB with H.265. The trade-off is that H.265 encoding is slower and not supported on all older devices.
The formula is: File Size (MB) = (Video Bitrate in Mbps + Audio Bitrate in Mbps) × Duration in seconds ÷ 8. For example, an 8 Mbps video with 0.128 Mbps audio for 300 seconds (5 minutes): (8 + 0.128) × 300 ÷ 8 = 304.8 MB. Our calculator does this automatically for any combination of settings.
